Design development

After producing the conceptual massing experiments and deciding to use a combination of both the middle area and a mixture of below the sureface type scenario as well as a possible floating element, some further space planning was development to try and narrow down the design concept.

CONCEPTUAL MASSING - BLOCK EXPERIMENTING

In the early process of design the multi-functional theatre/convention centre some conceptual massing experiments were conducted to explore some of the opportunities between the varying ways to build the structure.

the areas were split up to separate blocks to determine if there was any advantage from a visual perspective......

out of the three the middle group of masses was the preferred option and therefore visual connections across the other direction were considered.

as these spaces were being sub-divided i then started to explore the option of staring to mass below the surface enabling parts of the design to form beneath the surface.

finally the last exploration with the massing was to place part of the design above ground level as a floating element.

Narrowing down site selection

I spoke with my tutor Brett in class about the extent of how far out the redesign could come out. The sketch below demonstrates the areas of interest that we agreed on and the extents to look at.... As the design intentions are not to visually impact the existing parliament structure my initially intentions are to move the structure further away but still in a way acting as a part of the existing structure. The yellow precinct was determined as the first preference to minimise the potential to create forms which would blocks these visual connections.
