exploration of structures on parliament ground level

the following images are based on concepts that were intended to incorporate the grass roof and produce a path/story that will draw and attract the people in to the existing structure as well and the new proposed theatre complex....

canopy support structure

after thinking of ways to develop an addition support system to the canopy. these sketches were drawn with ideas to structurally add strength to the canopy structure.... after looking at the two options for a while option b became my preferred choice as i decided that i could designed the poles to reflect the angle of the flag poles and this could be related back to the original parliament design....

first floor plan & functions

theatre further development

the previous location that i had chosen was changed to allow a better connection to parliament house, the sweeping lawns and to all the new theatre complex design to become a part of the existing structure... the new design is based majorly underground however the idea of the public being able to look in and out of the complex was maintain to allow this visual connection......

canopy form

i liked the form and shape of the canopy structure as it had obtained the features which i originally took into consideration as; light weight and transparent. the design made the structure seeming less blend into the parliament building and the views were not obstructed by the canopy form. however i was unhappy with the final structural strength of the canopy form....due to it's large truss span the structure need some extra support.

canopy structure - development

from the massing roof structure and further taking into consideration the more detailed sketch. the following structure was produced as a first trial process to determine the look and structural ability.

theatre concepts

theatre inspiration

these are some images which were looked at for inspiration....

canopy inspiration - part 2

further inspiration was concluded as the dome idea's which was originally created by buckminster fuller didn't seem to fit the design of parliament and i found that it stood out too much.

therefore i wanted to create an element that was transparent, light weight and yet still structural stable.

the following images are of the the olympic stadium in MUNICH.....

canopy decision

the decision was made to create a canopy element that was separate from the theatre complex yet still designed to incorporate the existing parliament structure and in a way become an addition that would pretect and blend in with the building.

the image below demonstrates the location in which the roof canopy will be formed....

canopy inspiration

R. Buckminster Fuller was a renowned 20th century inventor and visionary born in Milton, Massachusetts on July 12, 1895. Dedicating his life to making the world work for all of humanity, Fuller operated as a practical philosopher who demonstrated his ideas as inventions that he called “artifacts.” Fuller did not limit himself to one field but worked as a 'comprehensive anticipatory design scientist' to solve global problems surrounding housing, shelter, transportation, education, energy, ecological destruction, and poverty. Throughout the course of his life Fuller held 28 patents, authored 28 books, received 47 honorary degrees. And while his most well know artifact, the geodesic dome, has been produced over 300,000 times worldwide, Fuller's true impact on the world today can be found in his continued influence upon generations of designers, architects, scientists and artists working to create a more sustainable planet.
